How Cosmos and Polkadot are built

How Cosmos works

The Cosmos Hub stands on Proof of Stake with the CometBFT consensus (formerly named Tendermint), and a block comes out within seconds. Networks built on the Cosmos SDK send tokens to each other over the IBC protocol. Unbonding staked ATOM drags on for 21 days.

What Cosmos is for

ATOM goes towards staking, governance and Cosmos Hub fees, and it moves between Cosmos blockchains over IBC.

How Polkadot works

The design has two levels: a relay chain holds the shared security, and parachains connect to it. The consensus is Nominated Proof of Stake, with a block every 6 seconds. Staked DOT cannot be transferred straight away: an unbonding period comes first.

What Polkadot is for

DOT is needed for staking, network governance and for connected chains to obtain blockspace.

Questions about ATOM and DOT

Which to pick — Cosmos or Polkadot?
It depends on the task. Cosmos is contracts and applications. Polkadot is contracts and applications. Go through the table and the chart above; the decision is yours, and none of this is investment advice.
How does Cosmos differ from Polkadot?
Consensus in Cosmos is Proof of Stake (CometBFT), in Polkadot it is Nominated Proof of Stake. A block in Cosmos takes about 6 sec, in Polkadot it is 6 sec.
Which one came first?
Cosmos — launched in 2019, Polkadot later, in 2020.
Do ATOM and DOT move in step?
The link between their daily moves over the quarter is 0.51 (they travel alike).
Is an ATOM to DOT exchange available?
It is: 1 ATOM = 1.3891 DOT. The rate and the minimum amount are on the direction page.
