Halving: what it comes down to

The rule is wired into the code of the coin: 210,000 blocks pass and the block reward is cut in half. New BTC appears at a slower pace until issuance runs up against its limit of 21 M BTC.

How we arrive at the date

We count from the number of blocks remaining and the average block length over the past day (~10.2 min). Blocks arrive unevenly, so the estimate drifts by several days: the halving waits for block 1,050,000, and the calendar has nothing to do with it.
